The only news item I've seen lately that has anything to do with the South Bay is this. If I were her, I'd wait a couple decades or so to come out with this, but there it is. She was attending RUHS right before she was busted/rescued, so this qualifies as a South Bay book. Sigh. By my new self-imposed mandate, I suppose that means I'm going to read it and report to you here. Watch this space. And please let me know if any other South Bay-themed books are coming out anytime soon.
I'm bottling a weizen tonight. This should be the lightest beer I've made yet. It will be the perfect thing for the late-September heat wave. The Chipotle Metheglin is still seething. It's not ready for the secondary yet, but I think it will be by the end of September.
In the music world, I'd just like to point these out to you if you haven't seen them before. Great discs, and they can be found at a great price. The volumes I've bought have been some of my favorite albums.
The Access database I've been working with has bugs in Visual Basic code, and they have spelled the end of my tenure as sole Database guru for the PBC. Since I don't know VB, it was sensibly decided that the project would be handed to someone who could fix the bugs. I'll likely be a steward and backup data jockey at the event. The upthrust of this is that I'll be ready to start a new volunteer opportunity that much sooner. The South Bay Literacy Council will have an opening in an early 2004 workshop, and I may do some campaign work as well, since it's a presidential election year.
Surfing was unfortunately a wash this year. Phil, Jon and I could never get our act together. I've decided that I'm going to try this again, maybe in the off-season, but DEFINITELY with a paid instructor. When I'm paying for something, I'm motivated to do it. I even have some birthday money waiting to be spent on it.
Still contemplating the design of the new site. Coming soon: Photos of local bookstores!
Blogs can be fun, but on many days I simply have nothing to say. I was never a very good diarist. Although this blog has served the purpose of giving me a place to preserve my under-employed sanity through writing regularly, I now feel it can and should do more.
You may have read my entries here and here, about the literacy study that came out last month. Today I officially change this page's name to "#62 with a Bullet - a journal of South Bay literary culture". I'll review the local libraries and bookstores, and put up a calendar of local events. Links to local writers (maybe even interviews) should be part of the plan. This will take a while to put together, since I have a full-time job. Bear with me, and with the inevitably fitful design changes to the site. I've been coasting on a standard Movable Type stylesheet for too long.
Economic and governmental realities prevented me from becoming a librarian last year. Perhaps creating a little corner of the web that helps improve the lives of readers in my hometown will help make up for that.
If you have any items to share about literary locations and/or events, please send them to me.
